- British playwright, screenwriter, filmmaker and novelist of South Asian and English descent.
- Studied philosophy at the University of Lancaster and King’s college in London.
- Wrote the screenplay of My Beautiful Laundrette, a movie broadcast on Channel 4 in 1985. (Nominated for the Oscar of the Best Screenplay.)
- Categorised as a Commonwealth writer (like Salman Rushdie). He claims to be inspired by "the idea that ordinary people have their own history" taken from E. P. Thompson (English social historian and author).
